Adding Storage to Your Kitchen

If you are renovating your entire kitchen, it is easy to add new storage options.  You can install tall pantry cabinets, toe kick drawers, a lazy susan instead of a hidden corner cabinet, and purpose cabinets – like a garbage pull out, spice rack pull out, dividers for trays and cutting boards, etc.  However, you may not be ready to commit to the time and expense of a whole kitchen remodel.  Luckily, there are some creative ways to make better use of your current kitchen.

Here are some of our favorite kitchen storage renovation suggestions:

*Replace small shelf in base cabinets with a pull out shelf – it will add storage space and easier access to items in the back.

*Use tops of cabinets – In many older kitchens, the cabinets do not go all the way to the ceiling.  This can be a good space to showcase some of your bigger items, like a crystal bowl or water pitcher.

*Use drawer dividers- Get your utensils organized. You may find you can fit more than you thought

*Hang a magnetic knife rack, utensil rack, or rack for pots and pans- Hanging some of your bigger, bulky utensils will leave your drawers with more space.  If you don’t have a hood vent, maybe you have some space over your range to display your pots and pans. (This can also be a good excuse to upgrade your pans!) You can also hang on empty wall space or the sides of cabinets.

*Add some hanging storage on the back of the door of your base cabinets.  It needs to be low profile but it can be a good space to get your Tupperware lids organized.  Under the sink, it is a good spot to store extra sponges and brushes, dishwashing soap, etc.

*Add shelving – No free wall space?  Think about little used places like over a window, sink, or the fridge for a floating shelf.  If you do have free wall space, free standing shelves are inexpensive and can add a lot of extra storage.

*Add a kitchen island cart – If your kitchen is not big enough for an island, you may be able to make a cart work. Push it off to side when not needed, pull it close for extra prep space. Most carts have shelves and hanging space for added storage.

*Good container system- Don’t underestimate this last one.  Making sure all your bakeware and cookware is stackable will allow you to maximize space.
