Bringing the indoors out is a popular trend these days, especially here in South Florida. There are many ways to make outdoor living a cohesive extension of your home. The first place to start is by using similar or complementary patio materials. Your patio space can be done in concrete, stone, brick, or tile. Choose something that complements the style of flooring within your home. With your foundation in place, there are two main areas you can focus on to maximize the functionality of your outdoor space.
Start by creating a conversation area centered around a focal point. Some focal point ideas include a firepit, fireplace, water feature, or even pool. Pick cozy furniture that will hold up well against the elements. Choose fabrics that are water and fade resistant and easy to keep clean. Use colorful pillows or table décor to tie into the interior design. You may enjoy some sun but it is also important to create a covered area. Adding on a roof may not be in your budget but a pergola or roll out sun-shade are economical options. If you live in a hot climate, shade alone may not keep you cool enough to enjoy your space year-round. Consider adding a fan or even a misting system for added comfort. When it gets cold, a fire pit or heat lamp can come in handy.
The other area you may wish to add is an outdoor kitchen. It can be as simple as a built in grill or as fancy as to include a sink, fridge, grill, smoker and more. You want to make sure your seating area is far enough away that smoke will not be bothering guests. If your outdoor kitchen is covered, you may want to install a hood vent to help get rid of the smoke.
Lighting is an important element of your outdoor space as well. Use brighter lighting in the cooking area and softer lighting in the seating area. Uplighting on your landscaping can also set the mood when you’re hosting dinner parties. Last but not least, don’t neglect to liven up the landscaping. You can use trees and bushes for additional shade or privacy. Beautiful flowering plants can complete your look. One additional consideration is insect control. Different plants may attract or deter bugs so it could be beneficial to consult a landscape architect. Repellant candles and lanterns are also possibilities.
If you like entertaining or just feel like you need more living space but don’t have the square footage, creating outdoor living is a decision you will be sure to enjoy!
