With people spending more time in their homes for the past year, now more than ever, people are looking for a place to relax. The bathroom is that quiet getaway for many and it’s no surprise that designs are trending towards creating a spa retreat. Here are some of the design features you may wish to consider for your next bathroom remodel.
- Natural Elements and Warm Colors
Woods (or wood-look), concrete, and natural stone will be the most popular material choices. Top paint options include warm neutrals, chalky whites, pale blues, moody greens, and earthy yellows. Look for paints that resist mildew and wipe clean easily.
- Floor Tile
Tile floors are still the most practical choice for flooring. We will be seeing a lot of wood-look tile. Lay it in a herringbone pattern for a more luxurious feel. Marble and marble-look tile will be another popular choice.
- Wall Tile
On the walls, look for slab wall coverings and large size tile. Fewer grout lines make for much easier maintenance and cleaning. Stack the tiles either vertically or horizontally, as opposed to the traditional staggered subway pattern. Neutrals, earth tones, and natural stones will be the most common choices. However, if you do want to stick with the traditional subway tile, make it fun with a pop of color!
- Floating Vanities
Floating vanities can save space while still adding some storage. They create a clean look and also allow for easy floor cleaning.
- Quartz Countertops
As far as countertops go, quartz is one of the hardest, most durable choices, making it resistant to scratches and stains. It is also non-porous so you don’t have to worry about it harboring bacteria in the moist bathroom environment. According to the NKBA 2021 Bathroom Trends Report, 74% of designers consider it the top choice for countertop material.
- Soaking Tubs
Having a separate tub and shower continues to be popular. However, claw foot and built-in tubs are out and free-standing, flat bottom tubs are in.
- Smart Toilets
Wall mounted or smooth surface toilets are the most popular choices right now as they eliminate the exposed plumbing. It is cleaner in both appearance and maintenance. Additionally, they can be used hands-free and they even clean themselves!
- Backlit Mirrors and Medicine Cabinets
Dimmable, led lighting can brighten up the space or create the perfect night-light. It also provides ambient lighting without the glare you may get from a wall mounted fixture.
- Statement Lighting
Expect to see less sconces and more pendants and chandeliers, giving the space a more luxurious feel.
- Graphic wallpaper
Wallpaper has made a come back and the options are endless. You can do the whole room or just an accent wall behind the vanity. Either way, it’s a great way to add color, texture, or visual interest.
