Maximizing function should be the main goal for any mud room renovation.  Consider what needs have to be met first and then add your additional design elements.  These are our favorite upgrades:

  1. Bring in a storage bench – Many design outlets now offer great storage solutions so you don’t need to hire someone for custom built-ins to get a custom look. Wayfair, Home Depot, Joss and Main and more have a variety of benches, hall trees, coat racks, etc
  2. Hang up hooks – You may want a variety of heights and sizes. Hooks aren’t just for coats; they can also keep backpacks and sports equipment out of the way.
  3. Change door mats regularly – Mats in the mud room definitely take a beating and washing wears them out over time. Switching them out is an easy and fun way to change up the design of the entry.
  4. Add a mirror – Most mudrooms don’t have a ton of natural light. Add a mirror to reflect light and make the space feel bigger.  It’s also great to get that last look at yourself on the way out of the door.
  5. Paint- Paint is an easy way to change the feel of the mudroom. We recommend using some lighter colors but it is also a fun space to add an accent wall.  Maybe you want to try a bold color, some wallpaper, or add texture with tile or wood.  It is not a large space and it is often tucked away from the main living areas so it can be a good area to experiment with design.
  6. Upgrade lighting – If you still have old fluorescent lights in your mudroom, switching to an LED fixture can really brighten up the space.

If you have some additional room in your budget, consider installing durable flooring, like tile or luxury vinyl plank.  Adding wood to your walls – either shiplap or wainscoting- help them last as they can take quite a beating as well.  Lastly, you may want to consider having multiple drop zones.  Do you need a spot for keys and mail?  Shoe racks? A designated space for dog items? Backpacks and sports equipment?  A combination of cubbies, hooks, baskets, and cabinets can keep your space neat and organized.  If you’re having trouble visualizing the best use of your space, feel free to reach out to our project managers at Custom Homes Building and Remodeling.
